More and more people use mobile devices to access web content, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is ever increasing. To fulfill this demand, the body that administrates the gTLDs, ICANN, launched the .MOBI extension in 2005. The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the notion behind this TLD is that all websites that use it need to comply with special rules. In other words, all .MOBI websites should be built to be accessed properly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” created by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the .MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The regulations have provoked some questions considering the fact that the universal domain is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to access a website and the way in which this has to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be designed in such a way as to be opened by the majority of web browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.

In view of the fact that the .MOBI Registry does not register domains directly, you can register a .MOBI domain with any 3rd-party company, such as ours.
